For Read-Alouds (Early Elementary)
Ramadan Around the World by Ndaa Hassan works well as a class read-aloud in the weeks around Ramadan. It is visually rich, the text is accessible, and it opens up conversations about cultural diversity without requiring any special knowledge from the teacher.
Snatched by Asmaa Hussein is a strong read-aloud for character education. It works for any classroom talking about honesty and making things right.
For Independent Reading (Grades 3 to 5)
Planet Omar Book 1 belongs in every elementary school library. It is funny, it handles real social dynamics, and it reads fast. Zara's Rules for Record Breaking Fun by Hena Khan is another strong pick for this age group, particularly for classrooms doing leadership or community units.
For Class Sets and Discussion (Grades 6 to 8)
Kareem Between by Shifa Saltagi Safadi is the most teachable middle grade novel we carry. A Syrian American boy, a football tryout, a mother abroad, a story told in verse. It works for units on immigration, identity, family, and poetry. The verse format also makes it accessible to readers at different levels.
Heroes Like Us by Onjali Q. Raúf contains two stories about Muslim children navigating racism and prejudice in the UK. It is honest and age-appropriate and generates real discussion.
For School Libraries
The Eliyas Explains series by Zanib Mian belongs in any school library serving Muslim students. Children use it as a reference for theological questions that come up at school or at home. It is accurate, readable, and not preachy.
