The question we get most often from families who are just starting to build a home library is some version of: where do I begin? And underneath that is usually: I do not have a lot of money for this.
You do not need a big budget. You need a plan. Here is how we think about building an Islamic home library that lasts.
Start with Three Categories
Every home library needs something for each of three purposes: books children will ask for again and again, books that open up important conversations, and books that stretch a child's world past what they already know. You do not need dozens of titles. You need the right ones in each category.
Buy in Series
Series books are efficient. When a child falls in love with Omar from Planet Omar, you have four books. When a child connects with Marya Khan, you have multiple volumes to grow into. Series also mean you can buy one title to test, and add more when you know it will be read.
Board Books Are Worth Owning, Not Borrowing
For children under five, board books work best when they are available every day. Allah Knows All About Me, The ABC of Allah Loves Me, and the Blessed Words series are all worth owning rather than borrowing, because the repetition is the point. These titles are not expensive, and they get used more than almost anything else on the shelf.
One or Two Anchor Titles Per Year
Rather than buying a lot of books at once, think in terms of one or two titles per year that will become reference points for your family. Khadijah: Mother of History's Greatest Nation by Fatima Barkatulla is one of those books for many families. So is A Temporary Gift by Asmaa Hussein for older readers. These are books that get discussed, passed around, and returned to.
Let the Child Lead
The most expensive book you can buy is one that does not get read. If a child has strong feelings about what they want, follow them. A child who asks for the same Ruqaya's Bookshelf title repeatedly is telling you something useful about what kind of reader they are.
